Antique Diamond Wedding Rings

Antique diamond rings are few and far between. Extremely rare in the specialized field  of antique wedding bands, diamond wedding rings arethe equivalent of a big archaeological find!

 

Diamonds are very tough stones and are by themselves very rare in nature. Needless to say, the chance of diamonds being found in a mine is in itself a rarity. But yet diamonds have been mined since antiquity, so it is of no surprise that diamond jewellery exists from olden times. But to find one and have it carved into jewellery is very demanding of the technology available to jewellers of that time.

 

But one of the most famous diamond ring did come from ancient times. The world's largest blue diamond, the Hope diamond was traced to have first belonged to an Indian king. Although the diamond was relatively unpolished then, it was much larger then it was now until it was cut into the diamond as we see it today.

 

However, not all antique diamond rings are as famous as the Hope diamond. And because diamonds in the early days did not come with certificates dating it's production, it is nearly impossible to tell from when did a diamond come from.

 

The difficult of cutting a diamond also meant that most people removed diamonds from one ring to another when it changed owners since it was easier to carve a new ring that suits that finger than to find a new diamond to seat in the ring. 

 

This makes the diamond jewellery extremely difficult to trace, and therefore much of the antique diamond wedding bands in the market could possibly be false or worse still, fake. Unless of course, the diamond ring was handled down in your family from generation to generation.

 

The next time you see a antique diamond wedding band, you might want to second guess it's genuinity; and if it isn't a fake, you're very likely looking at a rare and precious piece of work.
